Bangor University: School of Computer Science and Engineering
Study the latest developments in computing and electronic technologies at Bangor University. We have a great reputation for helpful Academic staff who undertake world-leading research.
Bangor Univeristy ranks amongst the UK's top 30 universities for student satisfaction, based upon the most recent National Student Survey 2020; reflecting the University's focus on overall student experience.
Our staff figure among the world leaders in a broad range of technologies, from Artificial Intelligence and Pattern Recognition to Data Visualisation; Medical Microwave Electronics and Medical Simulation; Optolectronics, Broadband and Optical Communications; Organic Electronics; Nanotechnology; Nuclear Engineering and more. Undergraduate students undertake their individual and team projects in close collaboration with these researchers, whose expertise and knowledge also informs the undergraduate programmes.
Our Computing MSc course gives undergraduates from any discipline a route into Computer Science and related careers. This postgraduate course gives our students the widest choice of topics and modules to support their interest in Computing.
Our postgraduate programmes cover a wide range of subjects, with both taught postgraduate programmes (MSc and MRes) and research postgraduate courses (MSc by research, MPhil and PhD) on offer.
Our research is focused on six themes, which can often overlap to maximise synergies and resources:
Next generation Sensors, communication and electronic devices
From your car through to smartphones, the modern world relies on electronics, sensors and the communication between them. Research at Bangor University extends from nanometre scale semiconductor devices to sensors for biomedical applications. We explore large scale optical communication systems which enable data to be transferred at 40 Gigabytes per second.
Bio-medical and environmental Electronics
Investigating cutting edge technology in a highly multi-disciplinary environment, the Bio-medical Group is researching, developing and teaching the next generation of healthcare and bio-related technologies. Autonomous systems are of massive importance to the innovation and data collection potential in the environmental sector.
Nuclear Futures Institute; materials for extreme environments and predictive modelling
The establishment of the Nuclear Futures Institute at Bangor University is the result of £6.5M investment from Welsh Government through its Sêr Cymru programme. This has led to the creation of two research groups: one in materials and the other in predictive modelling. New facilities for manufacture and characterisation of advanced ceramics, alloys and composites has been commissioned.
Visualisation and Modelling Graphics
Computer graphics and visualisation research as a long history at Bangor; roots can be traced back to the 1970s and has seen the group hosting several major conferences including the Eurographics premiere graphics conference in 2011. Members research and develop interactive systems and explore how big data can be analysed and displayed. Research topics include information visualisation, virtual and mixed reality, immersive analytics, human computer interaction, imaging and segmentation, medical physics, wearable computing and computer graphics modelling. The group works collaboratively across University applying the skills and knowledge to ocean sciences, medical sciences, archaeology, law, psychology, history, language and lexicography.
Data Science
The group covers a wide range of data manipulation, classification and artificial intelligence, researchers are investigating machine learning, pattern recognition, classification algorithms, text mining, natural language processing (NLP) and practical applications. Our complex real-time system simulations supplied Europe’s largest pumped storage facility in Llanberis.
Pontio Innovation
Pontio Innovation is a business development hub, which nurtures ideas and helps to make them a reality. The group works with a network of members, from individuals to SMEs and larger enterprises. Product design experts help members to identify new thinking, methods and processes, all designed to assist them to develop and succeed. The purpose-built space is home to cutting-edge technology. Which means they are able to facilitate the prototyping of commercial products and services and can bring viable ideas to market quickly.
